coast. let's get right to randall pinkston, live in new york city. >> reporter: i would be standing in the hudson river. it caused the waters to overflow the seawall. the danger isn't over. sandy roared ashore early monday evening, packing sustained winds of 80 miles per hour with gusts over 100. the storm blew out windows and flooded streets up and down the east coast, tearing up atlantic city's famous boardwalk. the storm cut electricity to more than two million homes and businesses. this is video of a power substation exploding in new york. >> we knew this was going to be a very dangerous storm and the storm has met our expectations. >> reporter: new york city has all but shut down. the powerful storm surge pushed the warytsz of the hudson river through the seawall and onto

the walkway. tidal waters were sent into a major traffic tunnel linking manhattan and brooklyn. sandy's winds also caused a high-rise crane to collapse. it was left dangling over midtown, forcing the evacuation of several buildings. and new york university medical center was evacuated after its backup generator failed. dozens of ambulances took patients to other hospitals. sandy is combining with the winter storm and will continue to cause trouble and damage for days. >> there's been extraordinarily close coordination between state, local and federal governments, and so we're confident that the assets are positioned for an effective response in the aftermath of the storm. >> reporter: with sandy expected to affect the northeast through thursday, that response could take some time. and there are also reports of fatalities from sandy.

at least five people, from falling tree limbs. here is even more proof of sandy's power. a dock house in massachusetts is no more, thanks to big, strong waves. off the waters of north carolina, the coast guard rescued more than a dozen people after sandy sunk their ship. one other crew member was found unresponsive and the ship's captain remains missing. the hms bounty was a replica of a vessel from the 1700's and appeared in a number of big- budget films. and in maryland, a wave knocked down a cbs national correspondent, chip reed. reed says he, his photographer and their equipment are all okay. paul deanno is tracking sandy's every move. >> sandy is 800 miles wide and 800 miles long, one of the biggest storms in american history here. look at the size of this, bringing snow to portions of ohio, wind and rain to south carolina and then north of the

canadian border, we are looking at storm surge continuing in many locations. new york city still a 52-mile- an-hour wind gust. 100 miles per hour on the bridge earlier today. and the highest tide in new york city's history. as for where sandy is going, it's going to stay over the northeast for several days, bringing a lot of rain and a lot of wind. inland flooding is likely. power outages will likely expand. and this was the worst beach erosion in a generation. the atlantic city boardwalk is simply gone in south jersey. sandy is having an impact on our weather and it's a good thing. find out why, coming up. the storm forced the cancellation of more than 14,000 flights out of newark, washington, philly and cleveland. there have been hundreds of cancellations at our own three airports. more than 200 so far at sfo alone. >> the fact that this weather system has yet to move through

some of these cities, i think it's difficult to gauge the full extent of it right now. that makes it important for passengers to check up-to-date on the status of their own flights. >> i was out here for a wedding, supposed to fly out last night. things happened obviously. been here a little while. >> yeah. and it could be days before operations are back to normal. no delays for the giants coming home with the world series trophy. they showed it off to thousands of fans, who waited for their return to at&t park this afternoon. the celebration will continue through wednesday's parade. it starts at the base of market street and ends at the civic center plaza. and the fun begins at 11 in the morning. cbs 5 reporter elizabeth cook is at civic center right now. hi, liz. >> reporter: hi, dana. as you can see, city hall is ready. it's still glowing in giants' orange. and truth be told, the fans never stopped celebrating. tens of thousands of them packed in to watch their teams play on the big screen and many

we're expecting up to one million people to be flooding the streets of san francisco. live in civic center plaza, elizabeth cook, cbs 5. last night's celebration, anything but tame. quite destructive. fans tagged buildings with graffiti, sent fire, and also torched a muni bus. as police tried to disperse the crowds, 36 people were arrested. we have special live coverage of the parade of champions here on cbs 5 and on cbssf.com streaming live, beginning at 11 a.m. on wednesday. an unusual drug bust at sfo today. today the feds say a man swallowed cocaine and tried to smuggle it through the airport. but as juliette goodrich shows us, it's how much coke he had inside of him that's so hard to believe. >> reporter: customs agents say the passenger ingested 100 pellets filled with cocaine.

>> how big were the pellets? >> about two inches, filled with white powder. >> cocaine? >> cocaine. >> reporter: he was attempting to board an international flight to japan when he was busted by customs and border protection in san francisco. >> i would assume the officers, they have techniques and experience, they determined that something was not right. >> reporter: to give you an idea of just how much two pounds of cocaine is, here's two pounds of powdered sugar. this is how many he had in his system. take a look at how much he ingested. he was taken to a nearby hospital where he later passed the pellets. the contents of the pellets tested positive for cocaine. and this is one of the larger drug busts for customs agents here at san francisco international airport. net worth, $25,000 worth of ingested cocaine. it will be up to the u.s.

attorney and homeland security to file charges. in san francisco, juliette goodrich, cbs 5. a jury found a woman guilty of killing nursing student michelle le. prosecutors argued that giselle esteban planned for months before attacking le, her former friend, last year. they say esteban blamed the san mateo woman for wrecking her relationship with her ex- boyfriend. the defense wanted a manslaughter conviction, arguing esteban acted in a fit of rage, but the jury didn't buy it. >> i know michelle is finally laid to rest, in peace, knowing that... >> i feel like a tremendous burden has been lifted. you never know what's going on in the jury's mind, but they made the right call. >> esteban faces 25 years in prison. when you walk by,... >> one wrong step that almost got a man killed, all because he was talking on his cell

[ sound of ambulance ] >> reporter: jordan saw the whole thing. he says the man was running across the street, with an

iphone to his left ear. his baseball cap was also turned to the left, which likely blocked his view to the oncoming train. >> the cap was going this way, probably blocking the sun. then when he walked by, boom. that's it. >> reporter: it sent him flying six to seven feet. and if talking on his phone wasn't bad enough, witnesses say the man was actually crossing against a red light. >> put your phone down. it's only going to take a couple of seconds anyway, crossing the street. >> reporter: distracted walking has become a growing problem with the boon of smartphones, making for painful video clips of people walking and texting and hurting themselves. one man didn't even notice a bear in his neighborhood and walked right into it. last year, distracted walking sent 1100 people to the er, a number that experts say is likely to grow. back in san jose, as the man was getting loaded into the ambulance, we heard him, yes, ask for his phone. in san jose, kiet do, cbs 5. >> wow. a bay area restaurant has a

problem and it's not denying it. in fact, cafe del sol is advertising its troubles for all to see. cbs 5 linda yee shows us why the restaurant is being so honest. >> reporter: it's a sign that speaks to every diner's nightmare. >> i think it's great they want people to know. >> reporter: cafe del sol wants everyone to know it is infested with german cockroaches just like the ones seen in this youtube video. >> we actually found one or two coming here, you know, and the way -- it's an old building. >> in the morning, they come. >> reporter: the manager says they've called an exterminator to eliminate them, but the problem is worse than they thought. a recent remodel at a neighboring business uncovered the next. >> and they told us, that when they opened the walls, it was horrible. >> right now, if we put a hole in that wall -- the way he told

me, i'll have them come out. >> putting a sign like that on your restaurant, aren't you afraid you're going to scare customers away? >> that's unfortunately going to happen but we have a responsibility to tell the truth. >> reporter: he's hoping the honesty will pressure other businesses in the strip mall to shut down long enough to let exterminators clear out the cockroaches. so far, the warnings don't seem to bother loyal customers who still eat here. >> it also speaks to their integrity. >> does it gross you out a bit? >> a bit? i try not to think about it. >> you eat here. >> well, yeah. yeah. >> reporter: not only have they posted the warning signs, but the restaurant called the health department on themselves. the inspectors say they're coming. meantime, it's business as usual. in mill valley, linda yee, cbs 5. have you ever given blood? what about your dog? that's right. there's a critical need for donations in california.

cbs 5's frank mallicoat shows us how just five minutes can save the lives of dozens of pets. >> reporter: debbie gross and her husband bruce love their dogs. the couple prepared to do all they could to save her life. >> we wanted to give her the best possible chance, so we went forth with the surgery. >> reporter: torry needed a blood transfusion, a transfusion made possible by uk davis's all-volunteer blood bank. >> we have dogs that come in that have anemia, we have some that have trauma. >> reporter: this is nothing new for davis's veterinary hospital. they actually do about 800 doggy blood transfusions per year. is that right, shorty? come on. >> we use the same collection system for the dogs as we do

for humans. >> reporter: dogs can donate monthly and need to be between one and eight years old, at least 55 pounds, in good health, and heart worm negative. they also need a good temperament. dogs give blood through a vein in their neck. during the five-minute procedure, they continually give these dogs treats to keep them calm. joey's donations have helped save the lives of 44 dogs. >> a job well done. >> reporter: dogs have about five major blood types with one universal donor. dogs' blood is not breed specific, only species specific. >> these are the three current blood donors. >> reporter: their new dogs have made dozens of donations in torry's honor, donations that could save any breed, from a toy poodle to a st. bernard. >> it's a great opportunity to give back. >> reporter: in fairfield, frank mallicoat, cbs 5. and we have more information on

how your dog can donate on cbssf.com. just click on "links and numbers." we are keeping on eye on superstorm sandy, which hurled a 13-foot surge of sea water at manhattan tonight. the new york stock exchange will be closed again tomorrow. and the surveillance camera inside the underground station in hobo captured water gushing through an elevator door. we saw that. obviously 95% of this is because of sandy itself. but one other element came into this. a super high tide that was exacerbated by the full moon that's outside. one more thing i want to show you before i show you the full moon over san francisco, which we're showing you now, lots of snow in this system, in west virginia and ohio and western state of virginia. they're dealing with snow. for us, it's all about the beautiful clear skies that we had outside. snow on the back side of sandy, but right now we're talking about high pressure and beautiful weather here in our neck of the woods.

radar is clear. the sky will not be tomorrow morning. things are so calm north of the golden gate, fog is likely dense fog in the north bay valley, visibility of less than a quarter mile. a dense fog alert is in effect. otherwise, lows will be in the low 50's. concord, 53. san jose, you will drop down to 51. earlier i talked about how sandy is actually going to help out our forecast. here's the deal. sandy is not going to move that much over the next couple of days, kind of creating a traffic jamb in the atmosphere, slowing things down. there's a low pressure system that will eventually give us rainfall but since it's slower in getting here, it's not going to arrive until thursday, which means halloween, wednesday, will be dry, because of sandy. we'll have a nice day tomorrow and dry weather for halloween, courtesy of sandy. 72 for palo alto. redwood city also 72.

the death toll from sandy, p to 15. and we continue to follow breaking news from the east coast tonight. the death toll from sandy is up to 15 confirmed now, just a few moments ago. we learned that the crew member who was pulled from the water after abandoning a tall ship in the atlantic has also died. this is a live look from new york city right now, where a wind toppled crane dangles 1,000 feet over midtown, manhattan. and late tonight, fire torched this house in queens and spread to neighboring homes and businesses. firefighters had a hard time getting there because of the floodwaters. sandy also hurled a record surge of sea water at new york city, flooding a tunnel between manhattan and brooklyn. a huge storm, causing damage from massachusetts to virginia and beyond. >> this is the most
